Fighting bad posture, aching fingers and ever deteriorating eyesight, Mark Scammell creates vibrant stitch based artworks that reflect his interest in the mundane and overlooked spaces that surround us.

Rekindling an early primary school encounter with embroidery, one which lay dormant for decades, Mark fuses this traditional technique with whatever he finds of interest amid the contemporary landscape.

Mark spent his formative years beneath the Heathrow flight paths in the anonymous suburbs of west London. This no man’s land of semi-detached housing, office blocks and car parks left its mark on his psyche, re-emerging years later in the form of the works shown here.

Educated in London at Camberwell College of Arts and the Royal College of Art, both of which set his mind focusing in the right direction, he currently lives and works in Kent.
